Ealing North MP Steve Pound was among an unruly rabble of MPs who emerged victorious this morning in a charity pancake race outside the Houses of Parliament.

Teams from the Media, the House of Lords and the House of Commons gather annually on Shrove Tuesday to exchange good natured insults and toss a pancake around Victoria Tower Gardens.

All proceeds go to disability charity Rehab who offer vocational rehabilitation services for those with a brain injury in Newcastle and Birmingham.

Singing 'We Are The Champions', Mr Pound said: “I did it all for Ealing and I trained in Bunny Park!”

“I’m a member of the Labour Party and we don’t win a great deal so it’s good to be on the winning side and it’s all for an excellent cause,” he added.

In terms of tactics he joked about a strong diet of Guinness and cigarettes in the House of Commons but then said that MP for Norwich South Clive Lewis was their golden boy.

Mr Lewis said of the Commons: “In there we get at each other’s throat a lot, so it’s nice to come out here and see that we all have a human side.”

All teams had high hopes at the start  especially the Media and the Lords — who were keen to prevent the MPs from winning for the second year running.

ITV News Presenter Alastair Stewart OBE said: “It’s all about the best tactics and Crick (Michael Crick Channel 4) and I are more strategists, a little lighter a little nimbler.”

Lord Kennedy of Southwark and Lord Porter of Spalding CBE assured me that they were quietly confident and did not want to repeat a previous 11.30 finish when the race starts at 10.

However, it was the MPs who won the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race 2017.
