NORTHOLT'S Sqn Ldr Jesse Holland was one of many cycling enthusiasts taking on an epic feat for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

With 363 miles to conquer between Paris and Geneva, Jesse was keen to champion the Fund’s work, which he sees on a regular basis while based at RAF Northolt, by taking on the annual Battle of Britain Cycle Challenge, and was elated to finish.

“I’ve come to realise the full breadth of their involvement in RAF Service life, from childcare and relationship difficulties to injury and disability,” Jesse, 50, explains.

“Not only does the challenge give me the chance to support the Fund, but it also gives me the chance to take on an exciting sporting experience – I can’t wait to get started.”

Based in Northolt, Jesse had ramped up the training with less than a month to go, undertaking a tough regime of cycling and gym work.

“The hardest part had been learning the best techniques for cycling up steep hills. That said, the best part has been enjoying cycling down hills!” Jesse laughs.

“Although I was looking forward to the challenge, I’m relieved it’s over and hopefully a little leaner too!”

With a target of £1250, Jesse hopes to raise even more in donations for the Fund, allowing them to carry on supporting members of the RAF family.

The cycling challenge itself follows the success of the Fund’s inaugural ride last year, from Paris to London.

The challenge aims to commemorate those who fought in the Battle of Britain, including the 544 RAF individuals who lost their lives.

RAF Benevolent Fund Regional Director Paul Hewson commented: “Without the support of people like Jesse we wouldn’t be able to deliver the array of services we do for our beneficiaries.

“We really appreciate the time and effort he’s given, and his endeavours will ensure that we can help even more people, and continue to support the RAF family for many years to come.”
