AROUND 120 firefighters tackled a blaze at a warehouse in Wadsworth Road, Perivale, until just before midnight.

Around 30 people left the building before the brigade arrived and there were no reports of any injuries.

All of the roof and first floor were alight and the plume of smoke could be seen from the other side of London.

Passengers landing at Heathrow had a clear sighting of the incident, as did commuters on the adjacent Central Line.

Station Manager Jeff Lisle, who was at the scene, said: "Crews worked very hard in difficult conditions.

“Firefighters used aerial ladder platforms to tackle the fire from numerous vantage points, to prevent it spreading to neighbouring warehouses.

“This isn’t a residential area, but the smoke was travelling quite a distance so we advised locals to keep windows and doors shut."

A total of 20 fire engines were scrambled from Heston, Northolt, Chiswick, Wembley, Park Royal, Ruislip, Ealing, Hammersmith, Willesden and North Kensington stations.

The brigade was called just before 7pm and the fire was under control at 11.45. Crews were expected to be at the scene for some time damping down hotspots.

The cause is under investigation.

The site was identified by longer-term residents as the former art deco Philco radio factory from the 1930s.
