A TENNIS and bowls club in Acton is up for auction, despite interest in tennis expected to peak in the run-up to Wimbledon.

Springfield Bowls Club, which is on a 0.95-acre site at Western Gardens, will be up for sale at Savills, London, on the June 22.

The site has a guide price of £450,000 and is on a 99-year lease from July 1968 to the trustees of Springfield Bowling Club.

The tennis courts have not been used for more than a decade, and the trustees had hoped the auction of the site would lead to the tennis section reviving on the courts.

The auctioneers, however, suggest the site may lend itself to the development of two houses, which may prevent the courts coming back into use.

Chris Coleman-Smith, head of Savills auctions, said: “Springfield Bowls Club is an ideal auction lot, providing an unusual investment opportunity with exciting potential.

“The site could perhaps be developed in the long term, subject to the usual planning consents.”

The Lawn Tennis Association, which governs the games in the UK, says it is disappointed the site could be used for housing.
