CONSERVATIVES on the Greater London Assembly will urge the Mayor of London to scrap parking limits after it was revealed that half of new Ealing homes do not have a parking space.

The Tory group wants an amendment to the mayor’s planning document for London, giving Ealing the power to assess its own parking levels.

Figures show recently-built homes in Ealing have access to 0.52 off-street parking each, compared to an average of 0.73 in London as a whole.

Andrew Boff, Conservative spokesman, said: “Areas such as Ealing have high levels of car ownership and limited public transport, compared with central areas of London.

“It is ludicrous that some new developments have an average of just 0.37 spaces per home.”

One of the main justifications given for restricting car parking is to reduce car use, but Mr Boff believes this actually causes more congestion as parking spills into neighbouring streets.

The report found that Sutton and Kingston had the lowest availability of parking of any outer London boroughs, with only 0.37 spaces per home.
