EALING Choral Society is presenting an evening of carols and Christmas readings followed by mince pies and wine on Saturday, December 13, at St Barnabas Church, Pitshanger Lane, 7pm.

Each year, the society donates all proceeds from the event to a charity and this year has chosen Save the Children.

Save the Children teams are presently on the ground in West Africa responding to the Ebola outbreak which has killed more than 5,000 people in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

They are running treatment centres for patients, supporting children and raising awareness of how to prevent infection.

Back in the UK, 40% of our poorest children leave primary school without being able to read well.

In Ealing, Save the Children volunteers support pupils with their reading in schools and run a programme bringing together families, schools and the community for learning and development at home.

The choir, conducted by Jonathan Williams, will sing a traditional pieces, including Stille Nacht, which has been translated into 140 languages and, during the Christmas truce on the Western Front in 1914, was sung simultaneously by troops in German, French and English.

BBC Journalist and broadcaster John Sargent and Cleveland Ward councillor Lynne Murray will be among those reading seasonal poems and short pieces.

Tickets cost £12 for adults and £6 for those aged 16 and under. It is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment at the door.
