A BIKE ridden by a convicted murderer, who is wanted in connection with the disappearance of 14-year-old Hanwell girl Alice Gross, has been found.

Scotland Yard said the bike was recovered today but was not prepared to say where it was found.

Police have started searching a second property in Boston Road, Hanwell.

They had previously searched the home in Ealing where Latvian builder Arnis Zalkalns had been living with his partner.

Alice was last seen on August 28 when she was spotted on CCTV near the Grand Union Canal.

Zalkalns, who used the same route to get to work, went missing a week later.

He was seen on CCTV on August 28 cycling along Brentford Lock 15 minutes after Alice walked the same way.

Zalkalns was last seen on September 3 and has not accessed his bank account or used his mobile phone since. His passport was also left at his house in Ealing.

Yesterday, it was revealed the 41-year-old, who worked as a labourer on a building site in Isleworth, served seven years in prison in Latvia for the murder of his wife after being convicted in 1998.

He was also arrested in Ealing in 2009 on suspicion of indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl, but no further action was taken.

Det Supt Carl Mehta said Zalkalns was not wanted in Latvia and had served his time.

He also said the suspect had not been on police records in the UK and stressed they had no evidence suggesting Alice had come to harm.

The Met is liaising with the Latvian authorities over possible searches for Zalkalns within the country.
