A NORTHOLT man is riding the length of Britain and Ireland by motor cycle to raise awareness of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Long Way to Go, organised by the NCCA UK, finishes this Sunday.
Gary Dew, 52, of Lime Trees Estates, is riding with his brother Mark, 52, in solidarity for his stepson, Luke Wiltshire, 16, who suffers from a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer, known as neuroblastoma.
They will be joined by 18 other bikers.
Neuroblastoma requires an intensive form of chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. Around 20-50% of sufferers do not respond to high dose chemotherapy.
An elephant, covered in pictures of childhood cancer sufferers, will be travelling with the riders to encourage people not to ignore the ‘elephant in the room’.
The tour will take in children’s hospitals, such as the Royal Children’s Hospital in Belfast, finishing at the Ace Café in Alperton.
Deborah Dew, Gary’s wife and mother to Luke, says she is proud of her husband, who regularly takes part in awareness events.
Luke, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2011, returned to school this week after a two-year break. He is due to have further radiotherapy in the next fortnight but is hoping to get his schooling back on track.
