ON the eve of Andy Murray’s first Wimbledon defence, 300 primary aged children took part in a tennis carousel and competition at Ealing Tennis Club.
Children enjoyed not just the delights of the game but the traditional strawberries, as well.
The event, supported by Asda at Park Royal, was run by 30 Sports Leaders from the Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls.
Head of PE Amanda Petrie and Head of Leadership Rebecca Gibson, from Ellen Wilkinson, were justifiably proud of the efforts of their girls, who kept the children entertained with hitting and footwork drills and a competition from which the winner will progress to the London School Games.
Asda Community Life Champion Donna Turner, who was also present, said: “The sports leaders are local young people who have committed to volunteering.
“I’m thrilled to support them in showing the children how to fuel their activities with healthier snacks.
“Keeping the spirit of 2012 alive in our community is very important for youngsters.”
The programme comes as Asda Community Life joins forces with Sports Leaders UK in a three-year partnership aimed at improving the prospects of young people by building confidence and developing skills through sport and a healthy lifestyle.
This summer Sports Leaders UK will also be running subsided day courses in conjunction with Asda stores.
