LABOUR’S grip on Ealing tightened, with the party winning 53 seats of the 69 seats in the borough elections. Conservatives are left with just 12.

It’s the biggest Labour majority since 1988.

Leader Julian Bell said: “Today’s results vindicate the actions and policies of the last four years.

“I’d like to thank the people of Ealing for a magnificent and historic victory.”

Labour made gains in Elthorne, ousting one Conservative and one Liberal Democrat candidate, and also in Hobbayne, where they took one Conservative and one vacant seat.

In Perivale, where the Conservatives were targeting a Labour seat, they actually lost a councillor.

Labour turned the former Tory wards of Greenford Green, Walpole and Cleveland into a sea of red as Conservative opposition leader David Millican claimed the national picture had affected their borough campaign.

The Liberal Democrats retain four seats, with their leader, Gary Malcolm, returned in Southfield.

The turnout was 41.3%, though Hobbayne and Southall Broadway exceeded 45%.
