In fact, universities generated £73bn across the country, an increase of 24% since 2009, according to the research from Universities UK, which looks at the impact of higher education on the UK economy.
The study says the contribution from universities is higher than other sectors, including basic pharmaceuticals, air transport, advertising and market research, legal services and computer manufacturing.
UWL claims one of the best employment rates in the country, with 94% of its graduates in employment within six months of graduating.
