Profile:

The current MP since 2005, was suspended from the Conservative party following allegations he assaulted his wife in September 2007.

No charges were brought against him. Had to take time off as MP after suffering from depression and bulimia in 2008 and admitted to an addiction to prescription drugs.

He has caused an uproar in his old party by standing as an independent with fears he will split the Conservative vote allowing Labour to win the seat.

He has lived in Croydon all his life and became involved in politics at the age of 22 when he was first elected to the council for the Broad Green ward 28 years ago.

Works part-time at a Japanese bank.
