A TOP police officer has described a huge religious celebration in Southall as a "safe and happy event".
Sikhs in the area celebrated Baisakhi on Monday and many roads in the area were closed off as a precaution. Eight arrests were made by officers, half the number made last year.
Three people were arrested for possession of heroin with intent to supply, one for possession of class A drugs and five others for offences ranging from domestic violence to drink driving.
Acting superintendent Des Rock, of Ealing Police, said: "We will continue to consult with local community representatives and religious leaders around our policing tactics during unplanned religious events.
"Baisakhi day was a safe and happy event. The policing style used by Ealing Borough Police at planned religious celebrations is based on years of community feedback and requests for peaceful faith celebrations in the area.
"We will continue to listen to what all members of the community have to say and police these celebrations on behalf of the community."
