THE developers behind a controversial plan to build a 40-storey tower in the centre of Ealing have hit back at a report which criticisises the project for a lack of cohesion.

Glenkerrin, which has applied for permission for a total redevelopment of the Arcadia shopping centre, have welcomed aspects of the report published by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) last week.

The review said a "convincing case" had been made for a tall building on the site, but criticised the plans for a lack of public space and the design of buildings that will front onto Haven Green.

Marion Hardman, a spokesman for Glenkerrin, said: "One of the roles for CABE is to push for improvements and increased quality in any development and Glenkerrin fully respects CABE's stance.

"We are pleased that CABE is supporting the tall building as part of the development.

"One of the points we would challenge is the comment that more public space needs to be created as part of the redevelopment.

"Our plans are for 20 per cent of the total scheme to be public space which will transform the town centre.

"All the issues will be addressed in our response and we are working closely with Ealing Council on all the points raised to make a good scheme even better."
