BAA may have to sell airport
THE company that owns Heathrow Airport has come under fire today for its "lack of responsiveness".
In a report, published by independent business watchdog, the Competition Commission, investigators say BAA "dominates the airports market in the south-east of England".
Christopher Clarke, chairman of the BAA airports enquiry at the commission, said: "It has long been argued by BAA and others that competition cannot develop between BAA's London airports until the shortage of capacity has been alleviated.
"Particular features which we have identified as potentially limiting competition include the common ownership by BAA of its seven UK airports and the way it conducts business.
"We are particularly concerned by its apparent lack of responsiveness to the differing needs of its airline customers, and hence passengers."
Mr Clarke also said he was concerned that because of BAA dominance in the market, big development projects were only being carried out one at a time.
Although the commission stresses it has not reached any conclusions, the watchdog said it would publish any remedies to competition problems in August.
BAA owns Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Southampton and Aberdeen airports.
The commission could call on BAA to sell one of these to promote competition in the market.
An independent body, the commission's role is to maintain economic competition amongst business and to prevent companies securing monopolies.

Give you five quid and a packet of pork scratchings for it.
