BOOKS about African and Caribbean Olympians will feature at an Ealing Central Library event on October 18, as part of Black History Month.

From October 1-31, Ealing is celebrating Black History Month, and The Olympic Spirit - Journey to Greatness is one of a vast array of activities.

At the Olympic-themed literature review, people will be invited to recommend books they have read about African and Caribbean sporting heroes.

Cheryl Burke, of community group Black History and Culture West London (BHCWL), which is running the event, explained it wanted to highlight the inspirational stories of Jesse Owen, Michael Johnson and Usain Bolt, as well as lesser-known Olympians.

She added: “We are aiming to create a recommended reading list on the subject, which will then be distributed to schools, colleges and youth groups throughout the borough.

Two books, about Usain Bolt and Michael Johnson, will be given away free at the event.
This year’s Black History Month celebrates the contributions that people of African and Caribbean heritage have made to the arts, literature, sports and politics, both locally and across the world.
