CONCERNS that not all Ealing children would have a primary school place this year were put to rest on Tuesday.

In a bid to deal with the growing pressure for places, the council has created 390 extra permanent and temporary positions for the 2012/2013 school year.

The vast majority of these additional places will be at existing schools.

A total of 11 schools, including Oaklands Primary in Hanwell, Horsenden Primary in Greenford, Willow Tree Primary, Northolt, and Southfield Primary, Acton,  have expanded to temporarily accommodate an extra 30 reception students each.

A new Catholic primary school on the site of the Holy Family Community Centre in West Acton will admit its first 60 pupils this month.

A separate primary school is also planned for the site of the Priory Community Centre, also in Acton. This will open in September 2013. Building work is underway.

This current expansion is in addition to the 510 permanent primary places created since Ealing began its primary school expansion programme in 2008.

Ealing is one of many areas of London experiencing a shortage of primary school places.

High birth rates and the growing popularity of the borough’s primary schools indicate this problem will not be going away.
