PLANS to improve the dangerous West Ealing Lido junction were supported by residents just two days before a man was knocked down at the controversial crossing.
A 64-year-old man was involved in an accident at the notorious junction, which has the highest pedestrian accident rate in Ealing, on Friday. He was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, where he was said to be in a stable condition. A consultation, launched by Ealing Council, led to 90% of respondents backing improvements to the junction of Uxbridge Road, Northfield Avenue and Drayton Green Road.
“We are delighted that plans for safe crossings at the Lido will be going ahead,” said David Highton, chairman of West Ealing Neighbours, who campaigned for changes.
“It will make a huge difference to everyone who lives and works in West Ealing.”
The borough worked with Transport for London (TfL) for 18 months on ideas to make the junction safer for pedestrians. Improvements will include green man pedestrian crossings on all arms of the junction, moving a bus stop on Drayton Green Road and changes to road markings and signage. The pedestrian phases will mean drivers on Drayton Green Road may experience longer queuing and journey times.
