Sharma and Singh at loggerheads over new position

TOP Southall Labour party members have accused the new Tory candidate of “divisive” politics.

Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma has accused Councillor Gurcharan Singh, who will stand for the seat at the next election after, of being a turncoat following his defection from the party during last July's by-election.

He said: “At the by-election Cllr Singh’s betrayal of local voters when he defected to the Tories had no impact on my election victory and left the Tories trailing in a miserable third place.

“Local people saw him as a turncoat, some one without credibility and whom they could not trust. Nothing has changed since then in that respect and I expect him to be defeated at the General Election whenever it is called.”

Gurdip Sahota, Chair of Ealing Southall branch, said: “He has no moral or political authority to stand on, when he has betrayed the voters of Southall by defecting to the Tories after being elected by them as a Labour Councillor.

“He refuses to stand before the electorate as a Tory council Candidate and continues to immorally pocket thousands of pounds of council tax payer’s money through his councillor’s allowance.”

He also accused Cllr Singh of being a divisive figure in the Tory party.

In defence Cllr Singh claimed Mr Sharma had also defected before.

He told the Ealing Times: “Mr Sharma himself defected from the Liberal party to join Labour before he was elected to the council.

“My track record speaks for itself, and I have nothing to prove to the Labour Party. I was selected at a meeting in front of 150 party members for this post, and I'm honoured and humbled to have been selected.

“I will be ready to fight for this seat whenever an election is called.”

Whilst it's true that Singh needs to prove that he's worthy of the MP role, Sharma's comments are rediculous.

Sharma attacks Singh for moving from from Labour to Conservative, but Sharma himself has moved from Liberal to Labour!

Mr Sahota attacks Singh as "immorally pocket thousands of pounds of council tax payer’s money through his councillor’s allowance" because Singh was elected as a Labour Councillor but is now a Conservative, however Sharma is happy to pick up his own £18,000 a year councillor's allowance, but has only attended two council meetings in the past year. Therefore it appears that Sharma immorally pockets thousands of pounds of council tax payer’s money through his councillor’s allowance.

Sharma's majority as MP is the smallest majority in the history of the Ealing Southall seat. Ealing Southall's choice of MP at the next election is balanced on a knife-edge, so it's time to get out and vote!

Mr Sahota, please remind us if Mr Sharma still claims his expenses as a councillor while drawing his MP salary. I, along with many, would be pleased to hear that he does not.

Mr Sharma has, according to www.theyworkforyou.c
om, still only spoken in five debates in his seventeen months as the elected representative for Ealing Southall, well below average and hardly impressive.

Just to correct my quote
" My track record speaks for itself and I have nothing to prove to the Labour Party (I did not say to the people of Southall).........."

Obviously, the Labour Party is rattled by my selection and have resorted to personal abuses. Let me assure the residents of Ealing Southall, that I will not be deterred by these attacks, will not respond to mud slinging with mud slinging , instead will redouble my effort to serve the community as a whole including eastern Part of the constituency and not just Southall.
Cllr. Gurcharan Singh
Parliamentary candidate for Ealing Southall.

Whilst Singh needs to prove that he is worthy of the role of MP, the Labout comments here are rediculous.

Sharma criticises Singh for moving from Labour to Conservative; Sharma has moved from Liberal to Labour himself.

Sahota says that Singh is immorally claiming thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money by continuing as councillor after moving from Labout to Conservative; Sharma himself claims the £18,000 a year councillor's allowance but doesn't even turn up to more than two council meetings a year. Surely, that is a slightly more immoral use of taxpayers' cash?

One thing is for sure: Sharma currently has the lowest majority as MP in the history of the Ealing Southall seat. The next election will be balanced on a knife-edge, so it's time to get out and vote!

Where do get this figure of £18000 per annum from? Do you have a URL link? I do not think the figure is correct. I am beginning to wonder if this man comes from before the biblical flood when Dell laptops were not yet in bud on the tree of knowledge.

I agree George £18,000 is possibly 'over the top'.

The basic allowance for a councillor is, as listed on http://www.ealing.go
v.uk/services/counci
l/councillors/counci
llors_scheme_of_allo
wances/ , £9478.00 per annum which can be enhanced with committee memberships.

Still a nice little 'bonus' though if you are already drawing an MP's salary and allowances.

Sharma better pocket all the cash he can bearing in mind the credit crunch because soon as the election is called he does not stand a chance. People of Southall are realzing day by day that past MP's have done nothing apart from coast on a power trip

Please believe me when i say neither of these fools should be standing.I was asked by one of the tories many years ago to stand for them,i turned it down because i believed in the red flag.Times have changed and labour have tried to change. These two muppets are old morons who only want the distinction of being an MP, they will do no work for southalland ealing and will pocket as much as they can.I was at labour party meetings and left only because the way they chose the nominations was flawed(the best way to put it)Sorry i cant use the proper words. If the nominations were based on ability, then none of these two would be able to stand for the monster looney party(no offence to that party).I wish i had the bottle to stand for labour , i wish they would be more fair in how they choose.By packing the hall on nomination day with their own supporters and closing the doors with hundreds standing outside is not a democracy. We will not have any good Mps until we can get rid of these clowns.I have a good track record in my chosen field of work.I have helped make many changes for the benefit of thousands of londoners young and old. I have a few pet projects rejected by two mayors so far but one day they will come in and help OAPs from around the world.I would love to stand for labour and show what the labour party CAN do.God help us if any of these two get in.Come on liberals stick in a good candidate you never know what can happen.

One 2 counts I think Singh needs congratulations on: 1) not resorting to word used by Sharma and Mike, remaining dignified. I think the reason he does not need to make abusive comments is that he has an dwill continue to support people and that speaks volumes in itself 2) Responding to constiuents using this method, I cannot recall other Southall Councillors or MPs engaging with us in this way. As a resident of Southall for over 30 years I have seen poiliticians come and go I have never got the impression Mr Singh is in politics to gain status. Mr Singh works daya and night for US. I wouldnt change him one bit. As for Sharma well I have nothing to say!!!

Nicely put Sean. Think we all need to stand by Singh for the election and when it comes to the local elections I am sure Mr. Singh will support anyone willing to stand against Labour young or old. Southall Green has always been represented by a bunch of jokes ... I for one can not wait for the elections both parlimentary and local
