Gurcharan Singh announced as Conservative candidate

THE Tories have announced the candidate they hope can wrest a local parliamentary seat away from labour at the next General Election.

Councillor Gurcharan Singh has been chosen to represent the Conservatives at the next election, which is expected to be in May 2010, at the Ealing Southall seat.

Cllr Singh was one of five councillors to defect from Labour to the Tories during the July 2007 by-election for the seat, which was won by Labour's Virendra Sharma by around 10,000 votes.

More soon.

Good luck Cllr. Singh. Lord alone knows Southall (and the forgotten part of the constituency in Hanwell) and the rest of the country needs a change.

It is Cllr Singh's sole political ambition to become MP regardless of whether he is Tory or Labour. His snub at the Labour nomination was the sole reason he defected. Now he gets his wish although how would Southall benefit from a lizard who changes his colours very easily!

It is difficult to choose a changeling politician, although Winston Churchill was one.
The existing MP on several occasions has been written to and never has replied. As a constituency MP he shames his position. All other constituency MPs I have written to in the past have without fail given a first time response. This is why this individual does not deserve our votes.

To Nigel, thank you for your good wishes and let me assure you that Hanwell and parts of Ealing, which form part of my constituency will not only figure prominently in my campaign strategy but also for regeneration and to bring in more investment to this area.
Jamie attacks me for my defection, but ask Mr. Sharma that why did he defect from Liberal to the Labour? It was because he lost as liberal candidate and then became Labour to become a councillor. He was the first ever defector in Southall. Perhapsg, at that time, his only aim was to become qa councillor. George,my track record speaks for itself, even in this year I brought in more investment to my ward than any Labour councillor in his ward over so many years and let me assure you that if I become MP for Ealing Southall, I will be accessible to all and have a fully equipped office in my constituency and ensure that constituents' enquiries are dealt with promptly.
Gurcharan Singh

God help us.Yet another who thinks by changing his spots he will be a better man. What was needed was a young man who can think of the future and help change southall with ideas that will promote the varied cultures we have.Southall could be a world class place with just a bit of imagination. We need trains to be running more frequently.I dont see you or old labour loonies providing this.Instead of thinking about your own political aspirations why not stand aside and let the youth have a go.They cant do as bad as the last few MPs.

I agree with Mick's point. Ealing Southall needs a MP under 50 yrs old.

Cllr Singh, please explain how it is beneficial for residents of Ealing borough that you, amongst a significant number of other cllrs such as Bassam Mahfouz, Ian Gibb etc are candidates to become MPs. Your underlying MP ambitions will probably impact on the service you provide to your consistuents.

Attempts to marginalise on the grounds of age is a puerile inclination of those without sufficient life experience, and since there seems to be often a stronger tradition for respect for elders in the Indian community it is possibly a benefit to see an older Sikh selected as a candidate. It just depends where his main tendencies lie, i.e. will he be engaged energetically and exclusively with all the community, or will he spending time being involved with politics in India – which seems to be the current practice. Does he unlike his opponent, have the courage oratory skills and passion to stand in the back benches and engage frequently in parliamentary debate? What’s he like at telling jokes? It behoves Councillor Singh to realise his intention of having a fully equipped office as soon as possible. This does mean including a modern broad thinking younger person, who among other things proof reads his blogs to ensure that there are not two spelling errors in just one entry. It also includes getting his astoundingly totally bare blog site up and running. What sort of a mind is it which is so inert in such a technologically modern public place? (N.B. To remove the site would be medieval). He claims to have brought in investment to his ward, which is good, but who knows what that was? We need to know a lot more about Councillor Singh and what he has done, and what he wants to do, because there has been a long tradition of looking inwards rather than outwards in his neck of the woods. Changing his spots is not by itself a sin for an intelligent person, but naturally arouses suspicion. He will have to work doubly hard to gain respect around the whole constituency by telling us, publicly, where he stands - often.

Mick
I see that you are from Southall and even you must have realized that Southall has turned from dust to dirt over the years. What exactly have the MP's done in the past? My view is that reamrks based on age should be kept to yourself unless you are willing to make a stand yourself. Merley sitting there making such comments does not really make that difference. If you want to challange the position put you money where your mouth is and first stand for a councillors position and then move on from there ... Tories are the way forward and they always have been .... Anyone could do a better job than Sharma, probably even you ....
