Box junctions suspended after appeal defeat

TWO controversial Southall box junctions have been temporarily suspended after Ealing Council lost a parking appeal.

A parking adjudicator overturned 17 tickets handed to drivers from London United Busways, who stopped in the junctions, in South Road.

Officers have now said they will stop enforcing them until they get advice from the Department of Transport (DfT).

Councillor Phil Taylor, responsible for customer and community services, recognised the box junctions had been controversial but said they had been put in to ease congestion.

He said: "As this confused situation is clearly unacceptable, at the beginning of the year we sought the DfT's views on the design of the yellow box junctions.

“As of today no proper response has been received and as such we are not prepared as a council to continue enforcement until we have such a response."

The verdict is part of a long running battle over two separate spots in the area where a series of appeals have gone against the council.
