A NEW committee is set to take over at the largest Gurdwara outside India following a close election on Sunday.
The results of the poll were announced just after 4pm yesterday (Mon) and showed the opposition Lion group had secured about 300 more votes than the incumbent Falcon group.
The result brings to an end the 14-year chairmanship of Himmat Singh Sohi, although a new chairman is not expected to be decided upon until later this week, with the Lion group taking over on Sunday.
More than 100 police were on duty for the election at the Havelock Road Gurdwara amid fears of intimidation surrounding the election.
However, Balbir Singh Saini, a member of the victorious group, said the day passed off peacefully.
He said: “It's good news for everyone here as most people wanted a change.
“There has been much tension for the past few years, and this is something we want to put an end to. We want to bring everyone together peacefully.”
Around 300 people gathered together last night to celebrate the result.
