The standard of street signage in London needs urgent improvement, with many signs in obscure places or missing, a lobby group says.

The London Transport Users Committee is calling on local authorities to do more to follow regulations on street signs, and says poor signage confuses Londoners and tourists alike.

LTUC Chair Suzanne May said: “The regulations and guidance to local authorities effectively dates back to before the Second World War and most of it is excellent, but sadly it is not being followed.

The committee has released a report “Where am I – street name signs in London”, containing proposals certain to gain the support of anyone who has got lost in the city.

Signs should be fixed within three metres of every street corner on both sides, and at all T-junctions, the report says.

It also calls for signs to be located every 200 metres on major roads, and for all signs should be set to a minimum height to combat vandalism and possible obstruction by vehicles
