Caterpillars cause for concern

RESIDENTS are being urged to keep an eye out for dangerous caterpillars which can cause health problems.

The larvae of the oak processionary moths were spotted making nests in the borough last year, and council workers are worried they may return this year.

Tiny hairs on the caterpillars can cause breathing problems in humans and animals, as well as eye irritation and rashes.

They are also known to damage the oak trees they spin their silky nests in.

Neil Manning, the tree service manager at Ealing Council, said: "We do not want to alarm or worry anybody but it is important that people report any sightings to us so the nests and caterpillars can be dealt with safely.

"Residents should not deal with the problem themselves, or touch the nests or larvae."

There have been no reported sightings of the caterpillars in Ealing yet this year.
