A YOUNG chef has wowed judges in a national restaurant competition to go through to the regional final.

Daniel Budden, 22, a chef at Chiswick's La Trompette, impressed judges in the first round of the Young Chef Young Waiter 2002 competition without having to do any cooking.

Entrants had to submit a questionnaire answering questions such as 'Who they aspire to and why?" and "What contributions would they make to the industry in the future?" and Daniel was picked from 100 other entrants to go through to Southern regional finals.

The young chef young waiter competition is thought to be one of the most challenging competitions for aspiring young chefs and waiters and this is the first competition Daniel has entered. He said: "I'm obviously very happy. I haven't always wanted to be a chef, it was something that just happened."

Daniel will now be tested on basic cooking skills and theoretical knowledge in front of a panel of experts at the Southern Regional finals at Oxford Brookes University on September 12.
