A RESEARCHER will use artificial intelligence to reduce flood risks in Ealing and across the world – drastically improving quality of life for thanks to a funding grant.
Dr Kourosh Behzadian is one of seven awarded The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship as he continues to develop smart drainage systems.
His work will make use of artificial intelligence to prevent flooding by monitoring, planning and diverting discharge of water from the drains before heavy rain occurs.
Testing will be carried out on pilot studies, working with Thames Water, Ealing and Hillingdon councils.
Dr Behzadian, Associate Professor at the University of West London’s’s School of Computing and Engineering in Ealing, saidour drains were affected by climate change, ageing infrastructure and limited capacity.
“These factors often lead to system blockages and considerably increase the risks of urban flooding, cause environmental pollution and serious disruption to residents,” he said.
