The chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, Gurbux Singh, was arrested following an incident outside a cricket match.
Mr Singh was detained under section four of the Public Order Act for alleged aggresive behaviour outside Lord's cricket ground after England's one-day international against India on Saturday.
Mr Singh's wife, Siobhan Singh, was arrested at the same time and is accused of obstructing police.
Mr Singh issued this statement to the press: "On Saturday the 13th of July I went to watch the Test cricket at Lords with my wife.
"At the end of the match there was an incident that led to my wife and I being detained by the police.
"We were both subsequently released without charge. I am awaiting confirmation from the police if the matter is to be pursued and therefore can't make any further comment."
