FITNESS fanatics in the north of the borough have just a few days left to enjoy a landmark leisure facility before it is knocked down to be redeveloped.
The Northolt Swimarama, in Eastcote Lane North, is set to close on Wednesday, October 31, and will be knocked down to make way for what Ealing Council describes as a "state of the art" facility, that will open some time in 2010.
New facilities will include a 25m competition standard pool, a dance studio, library and community hall.
Funding for the development was agreed in 2005 and the pool was originally due to close in October 2006, although this was pushed back by the Tory council until this year.
Councillor Nigel Sumner, in charge of Leisure Ealing, said: "The council is concerned about the obesity crisis facing the country but providing good sports facilities is part of our strategy in combating the problem locally.
"While the closure will cause some inconvenience for residents, I am confident the borough's other facilities will provide a suitable alternative while we wait for the new and improved centre to open."
The council has said leisure passes for the pool will be accepted at Dormers Wells Leisure Centre, Gurnell Leisure Centre and Acton Swimming Baths for classes and swimming.
Plans are also in the pipeline to increase the weekend opening hours of at Gurnell Leisure Centre to cater for the expected extra trade.
