A BROTHER and sister, along with their friend, were sentenced for carrying out a ‘crash for cash’ scheme on a roundabout. The victim was a pregnant woman.

All three pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation.

Kuljit Bains, 42, of Birmingham, and Amanjit Bains, 35, of Kings Greenfield, Ealing, each received six months in prison, suspended for 18 months, plus 150 hours of community service.

Avenesh Patel, 36, of Ash Grove, Southall, received four months, suspended for 18 months.

The trio initially came to the City of London Police’s attention following a referral from Hastings Insurance, who were suspicious of personal injury claims they’d made.

Police from the insurance fraud enforcement team discovered the victim was behind the fraudsters’ car on a roundabout in the Midlands when, for no apparent reason, they suddenly braked, causing their victim to crash into the back of them.

Det Con Kevin Hughes said: “Mr Bains became visibly agitated after an HGV driver told them he had footage of the collision. He even altered the mobile number given to him by the HGV driver before he passed it on to the victim.

“Fortunately, the HGV driver noticed this and provided the victim with the correct details so she could contact him at a later date, to substantiate her belief that she was indeed a victim of a ‘crash for cash’ deception.”

Each of the victims they had either suffered injuries to their spine, upper back or shoulders. The total value of the claims was £18,000.
