More than 20,000 people viewed a Harrow Council event aimed at reassuring the borough’s Romanian community about the impact of Brexit.

The Q&A session, hosted at Harrow Civic Centre in collaboration with the Romanian Embassy, was attended by 90 people on March 21.

A further 11,000 people tuned in to a live stream of the event and, according to the council, around 12,000 people have since watched its recording.

Harrow is believed to have the largest Romanian population in Britain – this event gave its citizens a chance to find out more about their protection once the UK leaves the European Union.

Romanian Ambassador to the UK, Dan Mihalache, said: “Talking about Brexit can be complicated, but I’d like to send one message that is very important for us: our community should be prepared for Brexit but without panic. No one will chase Romanians out of the UK.”

Attendees were given the opportunity to speak with Christopher Desira, a solicitor with the European Commission Representation in the UK, about what will happen after the withdrawal.

The session was conducted in English with a Romanian translation.

Cllr Graham Henson, leader of Harrow Council, said it was “phenomenal” to see so many people take part.

He explained that one of the council’s roles is to “engage with as many residents as possible” and said he was “proud to have built such a close relationship with the borough’s Romanian community”.
