MORE than 60 people joined a charity run and walk from West Harrow to Ruislip Lido on Sunday to raise money for nursery children living in one of the largest slums in Asia.

The event Donate4Dharavi, which raised about £3,000, was the brainchild of technology educator Wendy Petersen.

She visited a classroom in Dharavi during a trip to India last year with her daughter Emma and was shocked by the lack of resources.

“I was totally taken aback by how desperate the place was but also extremely humbled that, despite their abject poverty, the people are truly proud of what they call ‘home',” said Wendy, who runs the computer training school Click IT! in Harrow.

“I knew I could help the children there in some way and I made it my mission to raise money to buy them much-needed resources.”

Wendy said the idea for the run started with just a few running friends but quickly escalated once word spread.

She set out a half-marathon route starting in West Harrow, with points along the way at which other runners and walkers could join.

By the finish line at Ruislip Lido, more than 60 people, aged from three to 65, were involved, waving the British and Indian flags.

Dharavi, which is home to about 700,000 people, was used as the backdrop in the film Slumdog Millionaire.

Wendy is planning to return to Mumbai next month to deliver digital tablets, microscopes, text books and reading books via the charity Reality Gives.

Waitrose donated bananas and cereal bars for the runners and walkers and The Water’s Edge Pub in Ruislip Lido hosted the group free of charge.
