A former Red Cross nurse raised hundreds of pounds for a charity helping children in developing countries.

Margaret Palmer, a resident at Care UK’s Buchanan Court on Sudbury Hill, held a fundraiser for Save the Children and managed to drum up £650 with the help of Harrow community members and volunteers.

“Stand with Margaret” saw Buchanan residents craft Christmas cards, winter hanging baskets and jewellery which were sold during the event.

Margaret worked as a part-time Red Cross nurse during the Second World War.

She has lived at Buchanan Court for six months.

Ruth Halls, home manager at Buchanan Court, said: “Margaret has always lived life to the full, from her time as a stewardess, to her years of volunteering – moving to a care home certainly wasn’t a reason to stop.

“We always encourage residents to remain active and to continue to embrace their hobbies, or even start new ones. Margaret did a fantastic job organising the event and I would like to say thank you to everyone in the community who joined us on the day.”
