An “outdated” building will be redeveloped and expanded to provide dozens of new flats.

Harrow Council granted permission for the site at Watkins House, in Woodlands Road, to be turned into 78 flats in an ‘extra care setting’.

The new building, which will be three to five storeys high, will replace the old one and make use of adjacent vacant land.

It will benefit from communal facilities for over-55s, as well as some wheelchair-accessible homes and properties aimed at first-time buyers to help create a “mixed community”.

Cllr Phillip O’Dell, who is responsible for housing at Harrow Council, said: “We’re immensely proud of our homebuilding, and that means vitally important extra-care accommodation as well as temporary housing and new family homes for Harrow residents.

“This council believes in building a better Harrow for all our residents – that includes vulnerable people and the people who have lived here all their lives, as well as those who are just starting out.

“The new Watkins House is going to be a wonderful facility and we’re delighted it’s going ahead.”

It was unanimously approved by the council’s planning committee, subject to a Section 106 agreement that includes the delivery of 100 per cent affordable housing.

Officers pointed out that a parking management plan would be in place, while the fact that many spaces will be for blue badge holders will prevent illegal parking.

Current Watkins House residents will have the right of return to the new accommodation once it is complete.

The scheme is a joint venture between the council and Harrow Churches and Housing Association (HCHA), which promotes “wellbeing, inclusion and independent living”.

“Our long-term commitment to partnering with Harrow Council to develop high quality homes for older people will provide additional choice and an alternative to residential care,” said Chris Holley, HCHA chief executive.
