A north London school raised a whopping £50,000 for a charity supporting people with disorders of the nervous system.

Staff and pupils at North London Collegiate School achieved the staggering figure for The National Brain Appeal’s Immunotherapy Fund through a weekend of fundraising events and an online auction.

The charity has committed to raise £250,000 to support the second phase of a clinical trial of immunotherapy in patients with glioblastoma brain cancer.

Former Collegiate headteacher, Bernice McCabe, who led the school for two decades was diagnosed with brain cancer earlier this year.

She is undergoing immunotherapy treatment, not currently available on the NHS.

Fundraising events included a 24-hour sponsored improvisation performance, a fun run, face painting, guess the teacher from childhood photos and stalls selling home baked cakes.

Former head girl, Grace Link, set up a silent auction with lots including VIP tickets to Elton John’s Oscars party, a signed Lionel Messi football shirt, a London Fashion Week experience, a Jonny Wilkinson signed England shirt, a trip for two to the 2019 US Masters and a Royal Albert Hall Masters Tennis experience.

Ms McCabe said: “I was so impressed by all the fundraising activities that had been organised by the girls and staff.

“It was such a pleasure to be there and to witness their commitment, altruism, enthusiasm and resilience.”

Theresa Dauncey, chief executive of The National Brain Appeal, said: “It was wonderful to see the whole North London Collegiate School community coming together to support their former headteacher Bernice McCabe and The National Brain Appeal’s Immunotherapy Fund.

“The school was a hive of activity all weekend with so many innovative fundraising ideas and a fantastic amount of money raised. Well done to all.”
