A MAN who helped out at a football club in Hayes and abused his position of trust by sexually assaulting a boy has been jailed.

Carl Wright, 58, of Brendon Close, Harlington, was sentenced on Wednesday at Isleworth Crown Court to three years and six months. He will also be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Wright pleaded to sexual assault by touching of a child aged 13-15 and false imprisonment.

In March, police were contacted by the victim’s mother, who said her son had been sexually assaulted by a man who helped out with coaching at Sandgate Youth FC.

The boy, aged 13, had stayed at Wright’s home the previous night to watch a football game. At around 2am, Wright entered the room where the boy was sleeping and sexually assaulted him.

When the victim realised what was happening, he immediately got dressed. He ran from the room straight to the front door to leave but was prevented from doing so by Wright.

The victim pleaded with Wright that he wanted to go home and eventually he drove the boy home in his car.

Wright suggested to the victim’s mother there had been a misunderstanding, but as soon as the victim informed his mother of what had happened police were called.

Wright was arrested later that morning and charged the next day.

Det Con Alex Dhaliwal said: "These offences have had a significant impact on the life of the victim and especially his family, who trusted him [Wright]. The victim and his family have been very brave in coming forward.

“We are keen to establish whether there are other victims of Wright who have yet to come forward. Anyone who believes they were a victim is asked to contact police via 101."

Prosecutor Melissa Garner said: “Carl Wright at first tried to claim his sexual touching was a misunderstanding or a fabrication.

“But the willingness of his victim to give evidence in court, supported by an application to allow him to give evidence from behind a screen, led to these guilty pleas.

“Wright will now be banned from having contact working with children, including the role he had taken on as a volunteer football coach.”
