A WOMAN from Greenford is undertaking the Million Step Challenge for Diabetes UK as she wants to raise money for a worthy cause and get fit and healthy in the process.

The event runs until September 30 and invites people to push themselves out of their

comfort zone by taking a million sponsored steps over three month.

It will take Gayle Labib at least 10,000 steps a day (four miles) to reach her goal.

Gayle, 65, is taking part because a friend was told she was at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. People with Type 2 don’t produce enough insulin or their insulin doesn’t work properly.

About 90 per cent of the estimated 4.6 million people with diabetes in the UK have Type 2.

Gayle realised she could also be at risk and decided to take on exercise to reduce it.

She said: “I wanted to stop being a couch potato! I started walking a while ago but could only manage 4,000 steps a day, but then I forced myself to do more than 10,000 a day.

“I am now out of the house by 9.30am every day, doing circuits of Drayton Green Park. I've met new people on my walks and the bonus is I've already lost a stone in weight.”
