ALL London boroughs have been asked by the fire service to impose a temporary ban on brabecues in public parks.

London Fire Brigade wants the clampdown following a record number of grass fires across a tinder-dry capital.

Hillingdon is the borough with the most grass fires, 47, up to July 24, compared with 22 in the whole of July last year. In Ealing, the figure so far this year is 15.

So far this year, crews have attended 125 grass fires in Hillingdon, compared with 135 in the whole of 2017. Ealing’s record is 59 since the turn of the year.

Barbecues are one of the principal causes, along with smouldering cigarettes and glass bottles reflecting the sun’s rays.

Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said: “It never ceases to shock me how many abandoned smouldering barbecues fire crews spot.

“In these arid conditions, barbecuing on dry grass is not just thoughtless, it’s reckless.

“Many councils have already implemented a ban, but I am calling on all our partners to do whatever they can to help us protect London’s open spaces from devastating blazes.”
