AN order by Ealing Council to ban pro-life vigils around an abortion clinic was upheld in the High Court on Monday.

A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) at Mattock Lane, West Ealing, approved by the council in April, criminalises prayer, the handing out of leaflets and any act of approval or disapproval regarding abortion.

Alina Dulgheriu, a mother who says she was helped by pro-life vigils and who brought the legal challenge, has since launched a crowdunfding campaign to raise £50,000 for a further legal challenge.

She said: “Today, the court has said it is OK for councils to criminalise prayer, even silent prayer on our streets. How can this be right?

“I am devastated for those women that, since the introduction of the Ealing PSPO, have not been able to access the loving help I did.”

Andre Clovis, representing Ms Dulgheriu, said: “This outcome sets a dangerous precedent and is a direct attack upon our very basic rights, such as freedom of expression.”

Clare Carberry, of Ealing, spokeswoman for the Be Here For Me campaign said: “Alina always knew hers was a truly David and Goliath battle. I am full of admiration for her guts and courage in the face of the most terrible intimidation and abuse.”
