A hospital has unearthed documents of one of its more unusual employees while preparing for the 70th birthday of the NHS.

It came to light this week that Northwick Park Hospital used a robot to carry out “mundane but unavoidable tasks” during the mid-1990’s.

Photos of Jeeves the Robot were discovered as the Trust began collecting material for the NHS70 celebrations this summer marking the 75 years the NHS has been in service.

The five-foot high robot, complete with his own ID card, was “employed” to carry blood samples and notes around Northwick Park Hospital and was used in over 50 American hospitals.

Jeeves, who was pre-programmed with a map of the hospital, moved at walking speed and had an immediate stop function when obstructed before reportedly making a polite request for people to step aside.

Unfortunately, the electronic hospital helper did not pass his six-month probation period and his modern-day protégé, the Tug, is now widely used in the US to deliver meals and vital medication.
