It was all quiet on the Kingsbury front as the polls opened for the 2018 London borough elections.

A few loyal voters made their way to the Holy Innocents Church Hall this morning, but things were far from hectic for those running the station.

They anticipate that things will pick up as the day goes on – particularly after school and working hours – but it highlights the relatively low turnout expectations that accompany local elections.

One woman who proudly cast her vote was Anusha Rexsonuhathas. She said it was important to have your say when it comes to local matters.

“The people who are elected are there to help us. So, we should make sure we exercise our right to choose who fills these positions,” she said.

She was joined by her son, Vishal, who, at 17, is too young to vote. He explained that he has an interest in politics and believes the voting age should be lowered to 16.

“If more people are given the chance to vote, it can only be a good thing. At 16 you can make plenty of big decisions,” he said.

“The outcome of these elections will affect people of my age, so it seems unfair that we cannot have our say.”
