Those in Harrow who are planning to hold a street party to celebrate the upcoming Royal Wedding have until April 22 to apply for a temporary road closure.

Harrow Council issued a reminder that applications for the relevant traffic orders – which are needed to shut down roads – must be sent in by this date.

Prince Harry will marry actress Meghan Markle on May 19, with people up and down the country set to toast the occasion with organised events.

And while fun and enjoyment will be the order of the day, the council has released a series of housekeeping rules that revellers will need to follow.

Organisers must be able to show that they have thought about minimising what could go wrong, with potential bad weather cited as an example.

Barbeques, bonfires and fireworks are banned, and any form of selling or musical entertainment should be discussed with the council’s licensing team.

The same applies for selling raffle tickets in advance, while prizes should not exceed a value of £500 in total and the proceeds should go to a good cause or to help cover the cost of the party.

Decorations are fine – though they should not be attached to lamp posts – and if they span the length of the road, they must be placed at least three metres high.

This is to allow emergency vehicles to gain access and, for the same reason, a three-metre-wide passageway must be maintained while the party is taking place.

The council is covering the mandatory public liability insurance for Royal Wedding parties.

It also made it clear that people will be responsible for cleaning up afterwards, as well as considering neighbouring streets while they are celebrating.
