BBC news presenter Tina Daheley returned to her old school, Ellen Wilkinson in Queens Drive, North Ealing, for the first time since finishing her A-levels there.

Sshe spoke to pupils currently doing media studies to give advice as well as share some journalism tips for those aspiring to get into the industry.

She answered questions from years 8, 9 and sixth-form pupils and spoke about how she turned down roles in the City to follow her passion for journalism and how to bounce back when interviews don’t go to plan.

Tina’s visit to Ellen Wilkinson was a BBC School Report initiative. The award-winning project for secondary schools and sixth form colleges across the UK aims to extend the engagement and understanding of news and current affairs for 11-18s.

The project supports them in reporting on stories and subjects of interest relevant to them.

In December, BBC News presenter Huw Edwards spoke to students for School Report, giving a session on spotting fake news.

Tina is best known for presenting the Newsbeat bulletins on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw, BBC Breakfast and Victoria Derbyshire.

Speaking of returning to her old school, she said: “I was nervous and excited about going back for the first time since leaving sixth form. Back then, I would never have dreamed I’d be doing the job I’m doing now.”

Head teacher Rachel Kruger said, “'BBC School Report newsday is always a special event at EWS. From the outset, the project is a chance to celebrate our student achievement and effort as we reward our hardest working students with a place on the team.”

School reporters have had their items broadcast on BBC Breakfast, News at Six, across Radio 4 and 5 Live and World Service.

They have interviewed prime ministers, Richard Branson, David Beckham, Angelina Jolie and Mark Carney.
