THE most popular pet names are Charlie, Poppy and Bella for the second year in a row, according to figures from Pets at Home Ruislip.

Pets at Home surveyed new additions to its six million-strong VIP Club and found the top five most popular names for each species.

Whether the pet is a bird, cat, dog, fish, horse, reptile or small animal, Charlie, Poppy and Bella were clear winners.

However celebrity baby names and children’s films and cartoons have also had a major effect on how we name our pets.

Luna, the name chosen by model Chrissy Teigen and singer John Legend for their daughter, has become the third most popular name for cats. This astrological name makes the list for the first time.

Films and TV seem especially influential in how people name their fish. Disney release Finding Dory propelled the character into fifth place for fish, joining previous sensation Nemo for the first time.

George has also remained popular among the names chosen for pets since the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first-born, though Charlotte has not had the same influence.
