A pupil has been celebrating after scooping a top prize in a national competition.

Joshua Wilkinson, 9, from Alpha Prep School in Harrow, was named among the winners of a video challenge designed to keep children learning during the summer holidays.

The ‘Make Your World Bigger’ project, run by Discovery Education, incorporated a 30-day ‘film adventure’, which saw entrants learn something new each day.

They would watch a daily Discovery clip – taking in everything from star gazing to butterfly spotting – before answering questions.

The aim was to encourage children to be curious about the world around them by using films about space, natural history and geography to spark their imagination.

Joshua said: “The competition was an amazing experience, made better by the fact that I won.”

The organisers noted how the programme was specifically designed to ensure that pupils’ brains remain active throughout the lengthy summer break.

Catherine Howard, director of educational partnerships at Discovery Educational, said: “We were impressed with Joshua’s summer learning, and his commitment to completing the fun 30-day challenge.

“The competition can really help teachers and parents to keep children motivated during the long break from school, and we’re thrilled that so many used our fascinating film clips to broaden their horizons.”

Just ten winners were selected from across the country, with each one presented with a Discovery goody bag.

This was packed with exciting technology prizes, including a VR headset, space shuttle kit and night vision goggles.
