Labour five swap sides

FIVE Labour councillors from Southall have swapped sides to the Conservatives in protest against their "disorganised and divided" party.

The councillors, including former Mayor Cllr Gurcharan Singh who was excluded from Labour's final shortlist last week, have written a joint statement praising David Cameron's Conservatives and their Ealing Southall candidate Tony Lit.

The statement reads: "Locally since Conservatives took control of Ealing Council in May 2006 we have noticed that they have been making great strides towards trying to improve the quality of life for all our residents. "We've finally reached the stage where it has become blatantly obvious that we would be doing own voters a great disservice if we continue to dogmatically stick with a disorganised and divided Labour Party.

"Our goal is to see genuine improvements for our residents. We believe that the Conservative Party now provides our community with greater opportunities and is genuinely interested in improving services for all."

But Labour leader Sonika Nirwal has slammed the defection saying that Gurcharan Singh is only pursuing his only political ends.

"I am, of course, disappointed that Gurcharan Singh has betrayed the voters who elected him as a Labour councillor by opportunistically joining the Tory Party," she said.

"Gurcharan Singh has always made clear that his driving ambition was to become an MP. And he did everything he could within the Labour Party to achieve that ambition.

"But I am still shocked that he is willing to go to any lengths to become an MP.

"I know that what the community in Southall want in their next MP is someone who is a unifying force. "What Gurcharan Singh has done today is hugely divisive and the Tories will not gain any votes from it. The people of Southall are uniting behind Virendra Sharma."

But Cllr Singh told the Ealing Times: "It's been coming for the past two or three years ever since the old leader John Cudmore left - councillor Nirwal hasn't done anything to unite the party.

"She is entitled to her view but i think this is probably just the view of the party - they've passed it to her and she's just signed it.

"I think she should be focusing on her own duties rather than concentrating on me.

"I wanted to do the honourable thing and I have moved over with a clear conscientious."

And speaking at Ealing Town Hall today David Cameron welcomed his new recruits.

"I'm delighted to announce that five Labour Councillors in Ealing and Southall have come over and joined the Conservative Party and are giving support to our candidate, Tony Lit, who I think everyone now accepts would be the best Member of Parliament for Ealing Southall," he said.

"I think it is a really important moment for Ealing Southall, but also an important moment in British politics. This is the clearest possible indication that the Conservative Party having been changed and modernised is now a voice for everybody.

"We have broadened our appeal and many more people now feel that they can make their home in the modern Conservative Party.

"I think particularly for British Asians who share our values and strong belief in family, enterprise and work, the Conservative Party is their natural home.

"I am delighted that such talented councillors have come to the party because they believe that only the Conservative Party can bring the change the country needs."

The Labour Party must be celebrating the long over due departure of Singh and Co. Goodluck Cameron you'll soon regret this decision, how can Singh ever be loyal to the Tories?

During my 25 years of living in Ealing this has been the only Council that has delivered what it stated in their manifesto. For 5 councillors to defect shows what a joke the Labour party has become both locally and nationally.

So Singh fails to get the Labour noimination for MP and joins the Tories. I think that says it all a self seeking opportunist. I also see a bit of cast politics here because of whio did the noimination. People like that canot be loyal to anyone as the Tories will find out!. At least at the next elections voters will boot them out of their council seats!

It's interesting that the 5 councillors defected to the Tories rather than the Lib Dems who are supposed to be the main challenger in the seat.

Also, it sounds like Labour and their supporters are crying "sour grapes" about their loss.

cant the population of southall regardless of their faith or caste actually live in harmony? this is Britain in 2007 just to remind some of you who appear to be living in feudal India mode.

Gursharan Singh going..the best news I have heard for many years, now maybe the labour party can put someone up for the local GLA election that might actaully stand a chance of winning.
I am glad he's jumped to tories, they wont want him once they see what a devising individual he is. the others who jumped, he must have something over them.

I am a current Labour party member however, unlike those above I think its pretty sad that Gurcharan Singh felt it was time to leave. He has been a councillor for 25 years which in itself shows his loyalty. Living in Southall myself, I think he is one of the few that actually cared about ALL members of the community.

This is actually a big shame. The Labour candidate selection was a disgrace. It was obviousley designed by the NEC without any regard for the local LP members.

Those who discredit G Singh I think should provide specific examples of his so called failings. As far as the GLA was concerned, he lost having achieved the most votes ever by a Labour candidate for that post.

I personally would like to wish him good luck.

To DILS

Gurcharan's failings..OK, what about some of teh following that are proven and are his failings as a human being..a racist, a facist, a bully, narrow minded, irrational, a violent aggressive gang leader, a hindu hater..plus the fact he cannot speak in straight coherent sentenced english....a failure in every human sense!!

I think this reflects the good work the Conservative Council is doing after 13 years of massive council tax rises and general neglect from Labour.
If these five ocuncillors genuinely want to improve things for the people they represent, then I congratulate them on joining the Conservative Party.

Dils fails to point out that Gurcharan Singh was the only ever Labour candidate for the GLA - so obviously got the highest vote. However, on the same day as the last GLA elections (as the local press reported at the time) Ken Livingstone won Ealing and Hillingdon and Labour even got a majority here in the European elections. Being more unpopular than even Ken Livingstone, Tony Blair and the EU is hardly a sign of Cllr Singh's personal popularity.

Labour has been a joke for the last 10yrs +longer. they have done nothing apart from show there faces at events, and not do any real work, its all good having the title but it needs to be backed up+people should really work+do what they are supposed to. come on Tony Lit give him a chance there is no way he can be any worse. so heres to improvement heres to Tony Lit!!

Quite simply, Gurcharan Singh has really showed his true colours ! The man has no credibility and would not know what the definition of loyalty is. He has misled the Southall community, good choice that he was turfed out, and his cronies can rot in the Tory Hell Hole ! Southall has become a ghetto, thanks to the likes of Khabra,Singh and all the other pathetic jokers. All I hope for is that Sharma is a stop gap and a real MP is selected at the next election ...

As a Labour member I am disgusted that anyone can be that disloyal to any party. If you're unhappy with your party you can air your views in party and council meetings. Or if youstill feel the need to leave become an independant. DON'T MOVE TO THE RIVAL PARTY! You disgust me!
