A 79-year-old man raised more than a thousand pounds after giving up alcohol and cheese for Lent.

Paddy Duffy, who lives in Pinner, gave up his favourite treats over the Easter period in order to raise money for The Children of Fire, a local charity devoted to supporting severely burned children.

He gave up alcohol, cheese and sugar and instead walked two miles every day for 40 days.

Mr Duffy managed to raise £1300 after being sponsored by friends at his favourite watering hole, The Queens Head, in Pinner.

Bronwen Jones, the founder of The Children of Fire, said: “Thanks are due to the Queens Head and all those at the pub who sponsored them, customers and bar staff alike

“In particular, we give thanks to Paddy for doing without for so long – and doing so on our behalf.

“It is touching to think that there are people in Pinner who do not know us who would support our cause. Our thanks to all for making this a very special Easter.”
