Brentford are in no hurry to activate their one-year option on hat-trick hero Jota's contract, head coach Dean Smith confirmed.

The Spaniard, who returned from Eibar in January, scored his first senior treble, taking his tally to six goals in seven games, and he inspired the Bees to a 4-2 victory over the Championship's basement boys Rotherham United.

The Millers twice equalised, first through Aymen Belaid in the 67th minute and a fine Anthony Forde strike with three minutes left, after Nico Yennaris had put Brentford 2-1 up.

But Jota scored a penalty in the second minute of added time and completed his hat-trick after Lewis Price spilt Sergi Canos' shot in the dying seconds but Smith believes the club hold the aces over Jota's future.

He said: “We have an option on extending his contract at the end of the season but there is no hurry regarding that because the contract option is in the club’s favour.

"When he came back I talked to him about whether it was something he wanted (after sorting out his personal issues in Spain) and he wanted to.

“We were in total control in the first half but after the break they got a little lift and we got a bit sloppy and gave too many cheap free kicks away, which I was disappointed with because we’d spoken about their threat from set pieces.

“But Jota has saved it for us late on. He is a terrific player and I have not worked with a player with such good balance.

“When he runs with the ball he is a joy to watch and he has a wand of a left foot, but allied to that since he came back his work ethic has been wonderful.”

Rotherham's were dealt a blow in the pre-match warm up as Richard O'Donnell suffered a dislocated finger with Price replacing him.

Brentford took the lead after 13 minutes when Florian Jozefzoon crossed the ball in to Jota and, from an acute angle, he found the far corner.

The hosts dominated the first half but, after failing to score a second, were punished as Belaid levelled the scores on 67 minutes from Forde's cross.

Ryan Woods' cross was blasted home by Yennaris 11 minutes later but Forde levelled again with a thunderbolt before Jota's last minute double saw him take home the match ball.

Rotherham, who have only picked up one away point this season, are 16 points off safety and caretaker boss Paul Warne vowed fight until the end.

“In the second half we were better side and were more of goal threat. I always felt that we would score from set pieces,” he said.

“At 2-2 a point is not much good to us but it would have been good for confidence so to see them downbeat at the end, it is my job to pick them up again.

“Until it’s mathematically impossible we will keep fighting. It’s a difficult league for us and first few months were tough so perhaps it’s been difficult to shake off the mental scarring.

“I’m not at all embarrassed with way my team played because they played to their max and scored two goals and that is something positive to build on.”
