After missing out on the award at the Screen Actors Guild awards two weeks ago, Dev Patel was awarded a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor last night.
Despite the impressive accolade for the star of Lion and Slumdog Millionaire, Burberry managed to confuse the Harrow-born actor for fellow British Asian actor Riz Ahmed, from Wembley.
The fashion house took to twitter to announce that Dev was wearing a “custom made navy tuxedo” but rather embarrassingly tweeted a photo of Riz Ahmed, despite his suit not being blue.
Riz, who is also a rapper, is well known for his roles in The Road to Guantanamo, Four Lions, Trishna, and Nightcrawler.
The blunder did not go unnoticed as fans quickly responded in anger: “You should be ashamed” said one, while another declared: “What a joke.”
Burberry quickly deleted the tweet before posting a correct one of both Dev and Riz separately.
Speaking on the red carpet while unaware of the online error, Dev said of the awards: “It’s beautiful. I’ve got the whole Patel family here and it’s just a real joyous, happy time for all of us.”
