A car bomb defused in central London today was packed with petrol, nails and gas canisters, police said.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command, said: "It is obvious that if the device had detonated there could have been significant injury or loss of life."

Bomb squad officers defused the bomb after police received reports of a suspicious vehicle in the early hours close to the Tiger Tiger nightclub in the heart of London's West End.

Mr Clarke said an ambulance crew in the area reported that there was smoke inside the car.

He said it was too early to speculate about who was involved and he called on the public to remain vigilant.

One police source said the bomb posed a real and substantial threat to the surrounding area, just yards from Piccadilly Circus.

A witness reported seeing gas canisters being removed from the car, believed to be a silver Mercedes, at around 4am.

There are also reports of nails seen on the floor of the vehicle.

A massive police cordon was thrown around The Haymarket in the heart of the capital's busy West End.

Dozens of forensic officers were today poring over the crime scene, which was covered by a blue plastic police tent.

Scotland Yard said detectives from Counter Terrorism Command were investigating the potential bomb plot.

A spokesman said: "Police were called to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in The Haymarket, shortly before 2am this morning.

"As a precautionary measure the immediate area was cordoned off while the vehicle was examined by explosives officers.

"They discovered what appeared to be a potentially viable explosive device. This was made safe.

"The Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command has launched an investigation."

Rush-hour commuters faced disruption as nearby Piccadilly Underground station was closed and was expected to remain so for most of the morning.

The Haymarket is in the heart of London's theatreland and close to the popular shopping area of Regent Street.

A housekeeper at the Theatre Royal in The Haymarket, who gave her name as Debbie, said that when she arrived at work this morning she was told by the police to stay at the back of the building.

She said the suspect car had been covered with blue tarpaulin and forensic officers dressed in white suits were seen going in and out.

She said: "We were allowed into the building through the back. Police are aware that we are in the building and we are working at the back.

"We can see a blue tent with the car inside and there are guys in white suits going in and out."

Debbie said the entire length of The Haymarket had been cordoned off as well as side streets leading to it.

Jack Straw, who was appointed Justice Secretary in new PM Gordon Brown's Cabinet reshuffle yesterday, said ministers had been informed of the incident "much earlier this morning".

He said it was "very saddening" but "these things happen".

Mr Straw insisted it was essential that announcements were made by the police rather than ministers.

He added: "Of course the police will try to ensure there is as little disruption as possible. But everyone understands the key priority is safety."

One eyewitness said door staff at the nightclub Tiger, Tiger alerted police after the car was driven into bins last night and the driver ran off.

The witness said the large silver saloon car was being driven "erratically" before the minor crash. The driver was not stopped.

Tiger, Tiger, a popular bar, club and restaurant with branches across the UK, is located at 29 The Haymarket.

Intelligence sources in London said they were keeping an open mind on who was responsible for the car bomb.

Defence Secretary Des Browne said: "It does appear to be a very serious incident.

"My first reaction to this is, thank God that we have police and explosives experts who can make these devices safe, and the arrangements they appear to have done, and that nobody has been injured."

With open borders, and a farce of what this inept government calls integration i expect we have many more bomb plots to look forward to!

Labour has put it's taxpayers at risk so much, it's criminal they are still in power.

Our border is like a sieve, where terrorists, peadophiles and gangsters can come and go as they please.

And for an island, more drugs flow through our ports than any other country in Europe. This is creating havoc everywhere and putting our kids (our future) in extreme constant danger. It sounds like paranoia, but i tell it as it is. And we, the law abiding taxpayer, just sit here and take it. We are the mugs who will suffer in the long run because the likes of liberty, and the howard league are getting it their way.

goodbye Great Britain and welcome to anarchy!

I agree, it's absolutely ridiculous that the might of the Nazi war machine found it impossible to cross the channel to invade England, but a couple of blokes with a penchant for beards manage to, once again, strike fear at the heart of London.

In their desperation to curry the ethnic vote, politicians have allowed any notion of law and order or national security to take second place to their own personal need to stay in power - whatever the cost to the public.

There's an election in Ealing Southall next month - an area that has had it's fair share of trouble from gangs of immigrants feuding with one another. Perhaps the election will be a good opportunity for law abiding citizens in that part of London to vote for the kind of change our national politicians find it hard to.

I wonder if it has occured to anyone that everything we do in our western world is going to upset some fanatical religeon - be it the food we eat or drink - the games we play - the clothes we wear - or the god we worship or dont worship - to the point 'THEY' want to kill us - if these people dont like the way we are why do they persist in living with us?

What with this and the attack on Glasgow Airport this afternoon, I can't see any further justification for promoting multiculturalism in the UK. It's high time we decided what our national values are and stuck to them, instead of constantly trying to accommodate every special interest group and fringe organisation.

People who then choose not to integrate should be excluded from society permanently, either through voluntary repatriation or incarceration on some remote island in the Outer Hebrides.

hey brent if thats the case maybe all brits and other westerners should pack their bags from the middle eastern countries such as Abu Dhabi etc and repatriate back to UK! Racist and Facist worms like you with one track minds continue to paint all people with the same brush! maybe you should utilise the few remaining braincells in your skulls to remember Mr Copeland who actually killed and maimed many people in london with his racist and homophobic bombing campaign and the BNP scumbag Robert Cottage from Colne who was caught with largest amount of chemical explosives of its type ever found in the country. It seems all the above posts are from fans of Nick Griffin and co. And lets not forget that British History is written with the blood of many poor nations etc. Terrorism is evil but so is labelling every muslim and non white person as potential terrorists! get a life and a brain!

Brent i know voluntary repatriation is a policy of the BNP.

In my opinion there is not such a thing. People will either leave because of free choice or because they are forced to.

Anyway Great Britain is not a nazi state to intern entire groups of people, as perhaps you would like it to be.

Vincent and Chad - you both sound like apologists for the liberal elite who have brought us to this situation. Brent, George and chris are right - we've got a huge problem stemming from a capitalist desire to flood the unskilled labour market with cheap foreign workers. Potential problems to wider society and law and order can be ignored, so long as there's a profit in it for someone.

Reading Brent's post, i don't see where he's labeled any particular group as anything. It looks like a call for a national debate on our values, setting them in stone and then dealing with people who choose to live outside of the agreed laws. Internment? No, just imprisonment. I'd have thought you left-wing twats would have thought that was a great idea - wasn't that what the gulags were for?

reading these posts shows that integration is not working. When change is forced on people there is bound to be friction. especially when people don't want to fit in.

maybe people like vincent should pay more taxes to help immigrants,
And people against more immigration can pay less! then everyone would be happy. lol.

i would pass a law too that only liberals should be victims of immigrant crime. And those against never have any more run-ins with immigrants! Perfect.... sarcastic but worth thinking about EH!

The liberal left would have us believe that poverty is the driving force behind people turning to terrorism. Poorly-educated, socially-excluded people find something they need in religion, then evil masterminds twist their poor deluded charges so they take to violent extremism.

A very compelling argument, but one that is fatally exposed as a crock of crap by this latest batch of morons. Of the eight arrested so far, 7 were doctors and one a lab technician working in the NHS. Where, then, is the evidence of poverty or social exclusion? Have doctor's wages been savaged of late?

These individuals come from around the world. Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, India - they came to the UK as medics, swore the hippocratic oath and then ignored is the second they started planning these events.

I see some of you think I'm some kind of BNP activist - I am not. I'm just an average Londoner, fed up with this kind of nonsense as they try to go about their daily business. I've never voted for the BNP, attended a rally or stood as a BNP candidate. To my knowledge, I've never even met a member of the BNP.

As always, the liberal elite try to tar anyone questioning multiculturalism with the fascist brush. I like to think that the points I have raised are pertinent to the question of whether multiculturalism is working. Merely calling me a fascist doesn't really answer that question. I ask again, what are the benefits of multiculturalism?

As for Chad's post - you contradict yourself over voluntary repatriation, old thing. If people choose to leave for their home country, isn't that voluntary repatriation?
