London 2012 golden-boy Jonnie Peacock has launched a ground-breaking scheme that will see the capital’s school children watch history in the making at the World ParaAthletics Championships this summer for just £3.

On Tuesday, Peacock was at Marion Richardson Primary School in Tower Hamlets to launch a programme that will see 250,000 schoolchildren across Greater London watch the world’s finest para-athletes in action at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Tickets for the initiative, which is supported by the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, will cost £3 – as well as free admission for teachers – with at least seven gold medals guaranteed to be won in each session.

There will be free travel on Transport for London services including buses, tubes and trains, while a dedicated volunteer will meet and stay with the group throughout.

And Peacock, who helped join in with a PE session with pupils at Marion Richardson Primary School on Tuesday morning, admitted having the support of the next generation of sporting stars would help make the event extra special.

“It’s great to know that so many schoolchildren from London are able to come and experience a World Championships,” said the 23-year-old, who will be looking to reclaim the 100m T44 world title he won back in 2013.

“London 2017 is the biggest sporting event in the world this year and I am looking forward to being able to show so many young people the best of Para athletics.

“It will be inspirational for so many children to see the best para athletes in the world competing in London. Their support will be amazing as we bid to win medals for the nation.”

Over four magical weeks, the world’s top athletes will bring the roar back to the iconic stadium that saw Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Peacock sprint to glory in 2012 – and it won’t just be the athletes setting new records.

London 2017 is the first time the IAAF World Championships and the World ParaAthletics Championships will be held in the same summer, in the same city.

That means 245 events over 20 days of sporting drama and 3,300 athletes from around the globe descending on the capital.

Running until February 10 at 20:17pm, schools in London will be able to apply online for tickets for five designated school sessions during the World ParaAthletics Championships at the Olympic Stadium from July 17-19.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan added: “London is ready to welcome the biggest global sports event of 2017 and once again showcase our great city on the world stage and create new sporting history.

“After the success of our record-breaking ParaGB athletes in Rio last year, this summer’s World Para Athletics Championships in London is a not-to-be-missed, golden opportunity for 250,000 young Londoners to see our sporting heroes.”
